A POEM A DAY 38

ROBINS FELL FROM THE SKY

There was not a ray of sunshine in sight Overcast and gloom enveloped the skies The clouds saturated the ground With sprinkles of rain The sprinkles briefly turned into showers And morning turned to noon The rains ceased And as I peered out the window Robins fell from the sky One, then five, then ten Then they fell so fast I couldn’t keep count They fluttered through the damp grass And hopped through the trees Trees holding onto last year’s leaves Not quite ready for spring A concrete bath pooled in the dip of the driveway And they splashed and danced and bathed Unaware of my inquisitive gaze Suddenly the sun’s rays peeked from the clouds And just as quick as they fell They took flight The uncountable flock dwindled Down to ten, then five, then one Then none The only thing they left behind Was their song in my heart And a smile that delighted my face
