A POEM A DAY 66

GRANDMA’S HOUSE

Summer vacation
My destination
Grandma's house
Where if it thundered and lightened
I sat quiet as a mouse
With my cousins
A minimum of a half dozen
Of us at a time
But it was always
Me, Lisa and Sam
Cookie, Sack and Pam
Others would come and go
Like Mup and Shannon
Keith and Terrano
We played jump rope
Hopscotch and
Mother may I?
Sometimes it was so hot
I thought I would die!
But that didn’t stop us
From playing
Red light-Green light
Or hide-and-go-seek
I'm pretty sure someone
Took a BB to the cheek
We'd run and play
All day long
And sing silly sing-alongs
Screen door slams
"Now y'all stay in or out!"
Grandma would say
Cause she had the clout
And extending from her hand
A long thin switch
And that thing hurt
Like a son-of-a-bitch
We played cards
And shelled peas
Ate neck bones
And greens
Shelled more peas
Then butter beans
We'd sneak in the barn
To find Granddaddy's buck
We played gin rummy
Tump and pluck
And games like Monopoly
Life and Connect 4
And when that Chevy engine roared
We'd catch Jim to the store
We caught dragonflies by day
And watched fireflies by night
Sometimes we'd fight
But we love each other
Come what may
I wish I could go back
To those fun filled days
Back to my favorite destination
For summer vacation
And sit quiet as a mouse
At Grandma's house
