A POEM A DAY 75

PERCEIVED BEASTS

I have walked amid giants
And dwelled among trolls
I have counted their fingers
And smelled their toes
I have heard their laughter
And wiped their tears
I have done my best
To calm their fears
You see, it is man alone
That they fear most
Not goblins or ghouls
Nor Blackbeard's ghost
Because man is the killer
Of all perceived beasts
For God's sake will kill apes
Just for their hands and feet
So, it is understandable why
They choose to hide from the light
And find pleasure
In the cover of night
What I wish
I could get you to comprehend
Is they are just like us
Women and men
With desires and dreams
Of fanciful things
They like to play
Especially on swings
They have children
Who go to school
They are pacifists
So, there's never a duel
They are kind and considerate
And unselfish at heart
When they eat beans
They toot and they fart
They are storytellers
About the days of old
When giants and men
And even trolls
Broke bread together
In merriment and peace
In a time when
There were no perceived beasts
Only fellow companions
In an unblemished world
Where friendship was more prized
Than rubies and pearls
