    SHOW ME HOW

    Show me how to see
    Through this blinding rain
    Show me how to breathe
    Through this paralyzing pain
    My heart
    She's taken a heavy blow
    She's been knocked out
    A Tyson T.K.O.
    In a fight
    Without a ref
    My soul is tired
    Bereaved and bereft
    I just need
    A moment's rest
    To catch my breath
    To laugh in jest
    To feel upon my skin
    The softness of the wind
    A little reprieve
    So my heart can mend
    From this wound
    That cuts like a knife
    This wound that may well
    Take my life

    LET ME LET GO

    Let me let go
    For my soul is weak
    Let me let go
    So my eyes can see

    So my eyes can see
    Let me let go
    Of all my insecurities
So I can bask in the glow

So I can bask in the glow
    Of the light within
    Let me let go
    Of this ragged old skin

    Of this ragged old skin
    Let me let go
    For it was crafted by
    Those who don’t know

    Those who don’t know
    Or really give a damn
    About my deep inside
    The real I am

    My-Life-In-Word-Bruised

    BRUISED

I am bruised but not beaten
    Weathered but not worn
I am battered but not broken
    Tattered but not torn

    I am strong but fragile
    Ostentatious and meek
    I am haughty and humble
    A loner, a freak

    My wounds are not visible
They are scars upon my heart
    A badge of courage
    My scars, they are

I don’t know their end, middle or start
My heart, she carries flesh wounds and fresh wounds
    She is battle-hardened but kind
Some days she is sunshine and others, she's gloom

    DEFIED

    Why is it that love
    Defies logic
    All of me
    Loves all of him
    All his faults
    All his brokenness
    The parts of him
    That he hides
And the minute slivers of himself
    That he reveals occasionally
    Every part of me
Yearns to be in his presence
    And my soul searches
    For his in the darkness
    My heart calls to his
    In whispers
    Even as I write
    My mind is yelling
    "NO"
    "Danger Will Robinson"
    But my heart is deaf
    To the logical pleas
    My heart is irrational
    My mind struggles with
    The follies of my heart
    My heart is as wild
    And untamed
    As the mustang
    That roams the prairie
    Untethered

    ROWBOAT

    I am there
    In that rowboat,
Only visible to the flock jetting by.
    I am engrossed
In the solitude of this day:
    The peace,
    The quiet,
    The salty summer breeze,
    The rhythmic ripples lapping.
    The only sounds I hear
    Are nature-made.
    Occasionally, a cloud strolls by
    But otherwise, clear skies.
I wonder at the shape of them,
    Clouds...
    Where they've been,
    Where they will go.
    Alone, but not lonely,
Surrounded by the heavens and the sea
    And everything in between.

    TIME

    If time is constant
    With no beginning
    Or end
    Then surely
    Time travel is possible
    A journey into the past
    Just a step behind
And a taste of the future
    Lies just ahead

    A POEM A DAY 145

    May 16, 2021

    FINAL GOODBYE

She lay with her head on his chest, feeling the rise and fall and listening to the beating of his heart. She synced her breathing with his until their hearts were in unison. Occasionally, she would turn her head just so, to watch him sleep. In awe of his beauty, she was. She'd wonder how could a man be so beautiful inside and out. How could he ever truly want to turn this lover's delight into a committed relationship? Even though he knew her past and accepted her as she was, she felt unworthy. She loved him but at her core, she was conflicted.

She glanced at the digital clock on the nightstand. It read 3:32am. She was contemplating her departure. Was she going to leave for the night or for good? She was torn. Her heart was breaking. A song softly playing on the clock radio broke the silence of her despair. It was Bonnie Raitt's, I Can't Make You Love Me. She lay there frozen and her eyes welled with tears. When she heard the words, Morning will come / And I'll do what's right / Just give me till then / To give up this fight / And I will give up this fight...the tears fell. She gently wiped them away. She held in the sob, not to wake him. But he felt a shift and like usual he pulled her closer, intertwined his legs with hers and kissed her on the forehead. To him, it was a night like every other. For her, it was filled with inner turmoil.

As the song was coming to an end, she sang softly to him, And here in the dark, in these final hours / I will lay down my heart / I will feel the power but you won't / No you won't…and she did. She laid down her heart and felt the power. A power so strong, that every fiber of her being burned. She whispered, "I love you" into his soul and said goodbye for good. She lay there a while longer cocooned in his embrace, so she could remember everything she didn’t want to forget. The way he smelled. The softness of his skin. The rhythm of his heartbeat. The scar on his chin, identical to hers. The scar on his knee from a childhood wound. His touch. His warmth. His kindness. The feel of the rise and the fall of his chest. Their first time and their last.

When she looked at the clock again, it was 4:57am. She knew if she didn’t leave right then, she wouldn't leave at all. Her love for him was greater than her heartache. But she found the courage. She gently loosened herself from his tender embrace. As she rose from the bed, he reached for her hand. She turned to see him smiling up at her. He asked, "You leaving?" She replied, "Yes." When she was fully clothed, she leaned over, kissed him one last time and said her final goodbye.

That night was her most regretful moment. Her regret was not the goodbye but that she never told him how she truly felt. She made a promise to herself some years later that she would always say what she felt and let the chips fall where they may.

It's been 30 years and he is still a part of the fiber of his being. She remembers the smell of his skin, the prickled feel of his stubble, his touch. His warmth. His kindness. The scar on his chin. On occasion, she will allow herself to travel to that celestial place where souls meet. Her soul lies next to his and she again is cocooned in his embrace, feeling the rise and fall of his chest and listening to his heartbeat. She syncs and they become one again for a moment.

Guess she never really said goodbye because her love lingers on.

    FAITH & HOPE

    I won’t give you

    Another chance

    To break my heart

    My days of

    Blind faith

    Are over

    Cause faith

    Ran away

    With hope

    And when they left

    They slammed the door

    MATTERS

    As a young idealistic woman
    I would dive first
    And ask questions later
    Especially when it came to
    Matters of the heart
    And in this immaturity
    I have suffered fools
    And their insecurities
    Their jealousies, their lack
    Their un-mendable brokenness

I have grown tempered with age
    When it comes to
    Matters of the heart
    Because I loathe
    The distaste of suffered fools
    I am a woman
    In search of a man
    Who is secure in himself
Able to rest in my confidence
    My beauty, my sensuality
    My curves and my edges
    A man that will not
    Put me on a pedestal
    But a man who can
    Walk alongside me
    As we journey towards
    A common desire

    SEEK

Tell me what you want to hear
And I'll whisper those words in your ear
Tell me how maybe I might
Say the words that make your soul ignite
Tell me of that secret place
I can touch that makes your heart race
Or you can hide and I will seek
    And search and peek
Until I find that spot that blows
Your mind and curls your toes
